When I first saw the trailer for "How Do You Know" I thought it looked like a promising rom com, but then I saw the initial reviews for it and steered clear away. Would give it an 8, but to right a wrong, giving it a 10.

Destroyed by the revelation she spirals into an unhealthy relationship with a wittingly charming, but inherently destructive polygamist base-baller Matty (Owen Wilson. Meanwhile George (Paul Rudd) a rare breed of honest financiers, is being monitored for embezzlement and tax evasion, thus being cut from his company and brought on the verge of destitution. All because of his father Charles (Jack Nicholson) the company owner, who thought it best his son takes the fall for him, as not to spend the rest of his life in prison. Both in varying phases of depression, resignation and self-denigration the hopeless duo find an area of bliss happiness in each others company.
Having little to no knowledge regarding the movie beforehand, apart from a gist of the acting cast, featuring my personal favourites Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon. Overwhelmingly convinced that this would be another meek romantic comedy, it seem became pretty obvious, that it has more in common with "500 Years of Summer" hence possibly the body of disappointment surrounding the movie. Obviously "How Do You Know? fails to live up to the same quality, but the general feel and gist is somewhat similar, whilst the humour less pronounced than in a chick flick, although I still found it hilarious. Nonetheless certain clichéd occurrences, such as 'finding exactly what I needed' by having a dinner in dead silence does pose questions regarding the intellectual integrity. The overall message of getting up and countering the beatings of life does get taken by the undertow of romantic interaction, but does it with enough charm, that I forgot about the lost potential.
That said both Witherspoon and Rudd bring a charming novelty through their characters, coupled with a surprisingly efficient performance by Owen Wilson as the well-meaning, but mindbogglingly spoilt baseball star, bring a novel feel to the humour, which has awkward sensibility, far from the more up front standard people are used to. Witherspoon especially totals her role, seamlessly taking on the complex guise of a female in inner turmoil.

Great song. I don't know what is wrong with so many people! My husband and I thought this was one of the best movies we have seen in a very long time! The dialog was excellent, the actors were excellent, the story was excellent! This movie was totally enjoyable. You do have to pay attention and you do have to think some when watching this movie. Maybe that was why so many people gave this wonderful movie a low rating :o( Paul Rudd is now one of my new favorite actors. Reese Witherspoon continues to be one of my favorites. Jack Nicholson was superb, as always. Owen Wilson was. well, he was classic Owen Wilson! Bravo, James L. Brooks.
